C.H.O.I.C.E.S. Youth Outreach Tutoring

All recipients of the C.H.O.I.C.E.S. Youth Outreach Community Law Enforcement Incentive Award (Phase III) are afforded the opportunity to work with a tutor during their first semester of 9th grade.  Through long standing partnerships with Bradley University and Carl Sandburg College, C.H.O.I.C.E.S. students are paired up with a college student who has committed their time to the C.H.O.I.C.E.S program.  Many of the college tutors are education majors or those who want to share the gift of giving.

The tutoring component is a mandatory activity for all C.H.O.I.C.E.S. students.  Parents and recipients are required to meet with the tutor to arrange a schedule that works for all involved.  Students must meet their tutor on campus, which also gives an insight into college life.  Tutors spend an hour a week with their respective student, assisting them with a variety of homework subjects, while also developing a mentoring relationship.

Besides the obvious benefit of receiving additional help in their studies, an additional incentive is offered to students who fulfill the tutoring component.  Students completing a minimum of 10 tutoring sessions earn a refurbished computer that is distributed during the C.H.O.I.C.E.S. holiday party.
